Andrew Nerlich

Andrew Nerlich

As one of the older students at Lange’s, I enjoy the company of the widely varied ages and personalities of my fellow students. Jiu Jitsu is intensely challenging on every level, humbling and always evolving, so there will always be more to learn and pursue. It is also intensely social; the Jiu Jitsu people I have met in person and online have introduced me to ideas and pursuits far beyond the activity itself, even into art, music, psychology and philosophy.

I have always tried to be a competent generalist rather than a specialist with Jiu Jitsu. I strive to teach proper technique using an approach that will assist both beginning and more advanced students. I hold a black belt, but like to be seen as an advanced student even more than an instructor.

I blog about Jiu Jitsu seminars and other experiences at https://andrewn23-myma.blogspot.com.au/

Andrew Button

Andrew Button

BJJ captured my attention and imagination way back in 2005…when I joined Langes MMA, as fit and strong as I’ve ever been after 15 years of high level soccer…and then got thrown around like a stick man by Anthony Lange and Pete King…both at least 15kg lighter than me!

I never left…and strangely I have never done anything in my life longer than BJJ. I have learnt more from it than I could have ever imagined (and not just how to choke someone in 23 different ways in 5 minutes). I’ve rolled with world champions, I’ve trained in five continents, and I even have some medals to show the kids – I certainly never dreamt of winning an IBJJF gold medal at black belt…who does?

For me, everyone has their number. It’s the % of energy and commitment that they can give to a roll, or a session – in order to balance out their enjoyment, their will to win, their fitness, their longevity in the sport, and how they want to feel the next day. For some, that number is 100%. Good luck with that approach! For others, it’s 60%…because they want to train again the next day, and in ten years’ time, without injury. My sessions cater for everyone, with any number…I offer a solid cardio (ninja warrior) warm-up, intense drills based on takedowns, controls and escapes, I like to teach something new or interesting to demonstrate a concept, I always love some judo throws to mix things up, and finish with some quick, focused rolling.

But BJJ is about far more than the five minute clock, winning or tapping. If you can train as hard as your body can, improve your skills, contribute to someone else’s technique and enjoyment, then walk off the mat with a smile…then you’re always welcome in my class.

Finlay Quilter –

I’ve been obsessed with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since the day I started. After a few sessions I began to realize that BJJ is the most effective form of martial arts, especially as a means to subdue a person without harming them.

The best thing about Langes is our family culture where everyone is dedicated to improving each others technique, with no ego on the mat. The only thing that I like more than winning in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is teaching as it is such a rewarding experience seeing your students progress and begin to understand the techniques.

I have won the Australian titles as a juvenile 4 times and have also won silver at the 2017 nationals as a blue belt adult. I look forward to competing in MMA in the future.

My style is based on ‘take downs’ as I believe if your martial art depends on ground fighting, then it’s best to know how to get the fight there. I’m working on my passing game yet with long skinny limbs, guard is my specialty. My favorite submissions are armbars and triangles because you can get them from pretty much anywhere.

Zareena May

Zareena May

I have been delightfully and indulgently involved in martial arts for over 17 years. After doing Kung Fu for 8 years in South African, I took up kickboxing and BJJ when I relocated to Sydney.
I stumbled across Langes MMA and tried it out. I have not looked back and immediately felt a part of a knowledgeable and nurturing team.Being surrounded by excellent BJJ skills has kept me engaged and growing.
I have competed in BJJ with mixed results and value what competition has offered my game.
I continue doing BJJ as it teaches me more about myself and mimics life in that the growth is limitless.
I enjoy teaching my BJJ females and teens class as I see my skills being passed on and love being part of the BJJ journey of others (oohh and I love pushing them physically as well 🙂 ).

Chris Boylan

Chris Boylan

I started BJJ in 2010 after finishing up playing Rugby, I was looking for something fun,
challenging, and physical and I instantly fell in love with the sport. The team at is constantly
challenging me to become better, and more importantly they are a wonderful group of
people. I achieved my brown belt in 2016 and I am looking to start teaching BJJ at the club
as a way of sharing my knowledge and consolidating my own game and love of the sport.
My style of BJJ is gritty, I love the battle of half guard and applying heavy top pressure. I love
a guillotine or two! I also love the playfulness of BJJ and am happy to experiment and play
with all kinds of technique.
